Ma Xiaodong 馬小東 protagonist from the present time who dies in a freak accident and gets his soul transferred into the body of Prince Tai, Chai Rong, of the Daxing Dynasty
Yan Ni 燕妮 – ex-girlfriend of Ma Xiaodong from the present time

Royal family:
Chai Rong 柴容 (Prince Tai 泰王) – youngest prince of the Daxing Dynasty; blood brother of the emperor, Chai Yu; son of the empress dowager and the previous emperor; infamous for his large harem of beautiful men
Chai Yu 柴昱 (Emperor of Daxing大興皇帝) – older brother of Chai Rong, eldest son of the empress dowager and the antepenulimate emperor.
Chai Xin 柴欣 (Prince Ren 仁王) – third oldest among the seven living princes; half-brother of the emperor and Chai Rong; close with Chai Rong; avid lover of cockfighting; highly skilled in martial arts
Prince Fu 福王 – eldest among the seven living princes; half-brother of the emperor and Chai Rong; stationed permanently in the frontiers
Prince Ning 寧王 – second oldest among the seven living princes; half-brother of the emperor and Chai Rong

Concubines in Prince Tai’s manor:
Su Yanzhi 蘇衍之 (the first master 大公子) – youngest son of the Su merchant house from Jiangnan; offered to Chai Rong as library attendant and counsellor by his second brother, Su Xingzhi, in order to obtain the royal textile warrant
Pei Qixuan 裴其宣 (the second master 二公子) – named Pei Ruoshui 裴若水 by Chai Rong; was the first to be drawn to serve Ma Xiaodong in bed; attempted to drown himself in Wangxing Lake after Ma Xiaodong told them to exit the manor
Xichu 惜楚 (the third master 三公子) – ingested poison after Ma Xiaodong told them to exit the manor
Yueqing 月清 (the fourth master 四公子) – ingested poison after Ma Xiaodong told them to exit the manor and due to the severity had to be punched by Liu-shen
Mu Qin 暮秦 (the eighth master 八公子) – slit his throat after Ma Xiaodong told them to exit the manor
Sijin 思晉 (the ninth master 九公子)
Liuyun 流雲 (the eleventh master 十一公子) – hanged himself after Ma Xiaodong told them to exit the manor
The fifteenth master 十五公子 – slit his throat after Ma Xiaodong told them to exit the manor
Hua Yingxiong 華英雄 (the sixteenth master 十六公子) – born as Hua Tianbao 華天寶, named Lianwo 憐我 by Chai Rong; listens to stories told by Ma Xiaodong before bed each night; sent to train in martial arts
Chenfeng 晨風 (the nineteenth master 十九公子) – rammed his head into a wall after Ma Xiaodong told them to exit the manor
Wang Rui 汪瑞 (the tanhua 探花) – the newest addition to Chai Rong’s male concubine collection; strangled Chai Rong to death with the help of Su Yanzhi

Staff in the Prince Tai’s manor:
Xiao-Shun 小順 – Ma Xiaodong’s favourite and closest manservant
Zhong-shu 忠叔 – the butler of the manor
Liu-shen 劉嬸 – wife of Zhong-shu, appear to be very skilled in martial arts and stomach washing
Cui-niang 翠娘 – daughter-in-law of Zhong-shu and Liu-shen; a poison junkie
Doctor 大夫 – extremely skilled doctor; was able to make Su Yanzhi’s facial scars disappear

Others:
Fu Qingshu 符卿書 (the young Marquess Anguo 安國小侯爺) – the son of Marquess Anguo, cousin of the empress; highly skilled in martial arts; a.k.a Li'l Marquess, Batwing
Moyu 墨予 - personal servant of Fu Qingshu
